Until the 1970s, the majority of people in Britain slept beneath blankets and sheets; then the 'continental quilt' arrived from Sweden, and our long love affair with duvets began. Yet while hardly anyone would dream of being without a duvet these days, not everyone manages to find the perfect duvet for their needs. After all, there's just so much choice, and very little expert advice available.
Here at SleepyPeople.com, we’re here to help each and every one of our customers get a great night’s sleep, offering advice and guidance to choosing the right duvet for yourself and your family whilst offering a fantastic range of branded products at the UK’s very best online prices.
To put it simply, your duvet is an important factor to getting a great sleep and if you’re sleeping under one which isn’t right, there’s a good chance you’ll struggle to do so! Most commonly, ‘the wrong duvet’ refers to the wrong tog, resulting in being either too warm or too cold, however, the fill is also a key factor to be considered when purchasing a new one.
To offer our expert advice, here we’ll take a look at both choosing the right tog as well as a brief look at the different fillings available.
Choosing The Right Duvet Tog For The Season
To put it simply, the tog of a duvet refers to the warmth and it’s one of the most important things to consider when buying as if you get it wrong, you’ll either freeze or roast in bed! In short, tog ratings tell you how warm a duvet is and they tally up with the seasons.
For this reason alone, it’s not uncommon for people to own two or more duvets, ensuring that whatever the weather, they’re fully prepared and are able to ensure they get a great night’s sleep without being either too warm or too cold.
The tog rating of a duvet is based upon its ability to trap warm air and, technically, relates to the effectiveness of the filling as an insulator.
Never underestimate the importance of sleeping under the right tog duvet for the season as this alone can be a largely contributing factor to getting a poor night’s sleep. Too many people over-complicate the situation when they’re unable to sleep and look past the simple solution; the right bedding which, of course, includes the right duvet.
The higher the tog, the warmer the duvet and, as you’ve probably guessed, you’ll want to sleep under a lower tog duvet in the summer months and a higher tog duvet in the winter, with all being rated between 4 tog and 15 tog, with a range of ratings in between including 4.5, 7.5, 9, 10.5 and 13.5.
As a general rule, in summer, you’ll want to sleep under a duvet which is rated between 4.5 and 7.5 tog, in spring and autumn, under a duvet rated either 9 or 10.5 tog and in winter, under a duvet which is either 13.5 or 15 tog.
Flexibility Throughout The Seasons?
If you’re sold on the idea of different togs for different seasons (which you should be) but don’t want to purchase three duvets, the perfect solution could be an ‘all seasons’ duvet which consists of two separate duvets (usually of 4.5 tog and 9 tog) which can either be used on their own in the corresponding seasons or combined together to result in a 13.5 tog duvet during the winter. This can be great especially for those who are low on storage space yet still want to get a great night’s sleep whatever the weather.
Two People, One Duvet?
Perhaps yourself and your partner have different ‘requirements’ when it comes to the duvet tog which feels comfortable and, if this is the case, you may like the idea of ‘cool and cosy’ range which are essentially one duvet with two different tog ratings, one in each half.
Choosing The Right Fill
Of course, in addition to choosing the right duvet tog, it’s important to also consider the filling as this can impact upon the weight.
In general, a natural fill duvet (down or feather) will be heavier than a synthetic duvet. For some, a heavier duvet is what keeps them feeling cosy and snug all night, however others much prefer a light duvet which still keeps them warm.
Whatever your preferred filling, you’ll find all of our duvets displayed by both tog, size and filling.
