How To Feng Shui Your Bedroom

Your bedroom should be a place of sanctuary and rest. A calm, comfortable environment for you to unwind and sleep.

If you are having difficulty sleeping, or just feeling restless, perhaps your bedroom could benefit from a bit of a feng shui makeover.

Feng shui is the ancient Chinese system of creating a harmonious environment, and literally means “wind-water” in English. The idea is to increase the flow of chi, or life force energy, and in doing so support health and happiness, and even increase wealth.

In a bedroom, feng shui can create a balanced environment for you to connect with yourself, and – if you have one – your partner.

Not everybody believes in the philosophies behind feng shui, but it cannot be denied that a cluttered, badly designed room can cause stress and restlessness.

Here are some design tips to implement in your bedroom, to create a more harmonious space to relax.

1. Use Soft Lighting

Avoid harsh, bright lights, or ceiling lights over your bed.

Instead, opt for soft lighting such as lamps, and let in as much natural light as possible during the day.

Candles create lovely soft light for evenings, and scented candles can help create a relaxing environment. Candle light is also more romantic, and the bedroom should promote harmony in relationships.

2. Clear Clutter

One of the biggest causes of stress in the home is clutter. Cluttered surfaces, dirt, and dust cause chi to stagnate, so make sure you are ruthless with your cleaning and tidying.

Even if you struggle to be tidy in the rest of your home, try to give yourself a harmonious bedroom to escape to and rest and you will feel much better for it.

Try to have as little as possible in the bedroom, and don’t use your bedroom for storage.

Think about whether you really even need those old trinkets, or unwanted gifts. Things with sentimental value can be stored away in another room.

3. Bed Position

Where you position your bed within the room is really important for good feng shui.

You want to have your head against the wall, with a solid headboard. You also want to have your bed as far away from the door as possible, but be able to see the door from your bed.

This is a “commanding position”, and this placement should help you feel protected while you rest.

Having a nightstand on either side of the bed also provides good, balanced, grounding energy. Being able to walk around both sides of the bed is important too.

Also try to avoid beds with storage underneath. You want to make sure the bed is a good height above floor level, to enable energy to circulate around your body as you sleep.

Sleeping with your head under a window is not recommended, as your energy has no support or protection, and you may start feeling weaker over time.

Similarly, don’t position your bed underneath a wooden beam, or sloped ceiling. This apparently causes energy to push down on you in your sleep. A fix if this can’t be avoided, is to cover a beam with fabric.

4. Avoid Televisions & Computers

Having distractions such as televisions or computers in the bedroom is not recommended, as the bedroom should purely be a place to rest and relax.

If you must have them in the bedroom due to lack of space, consider covering them with a blanket when not in use, or even hiding them behind a folding screen to create a separate space.

5. Keep Books In A Different Room

A couple of books to read before bed are okay, but it isn’t considered a good idea to keep a bookshelf in the bedroom. This can make you feel overwhelmed, and if you have too many books in a bedroom it can feel more like a place of work.

If you really must have bookshelves in your room, consider adding doors to hide them.

6. Avoid Mirrors

Apparently, if you have a mirror placed facing the bed, this is very bad feng shui. Reflecting the bed can apparently invite a third party into your relationship, and result in infidelity.

It can also be unnerving to catch sight of another figure moving in your bedroom, even though it is just your own reflection.

Try to keep mirrors out of the bedroom, although if it is not possible to position your bed facing the door, a mirror can help to keep an eye on the entrance to the room – but try to avoid it facing the bed, perhaps place it off to one side.

7. Nurture Relationships

Try to avoid symbols of solitude, such as only having one nightstand, or only being able to climb into bed from one side. Art that depicts one person alone, or ornaments that are not in pairs are also typically owned by single people.

Being single is of course not a bad thing, but if that is something you would like to change, or if you are in a relationship, you may want to consider creating an equal, harmonious space for yourself and a partner.

If you are alone, and you are looking for love, it is apparently helpful to arrange the room as though there was already someone else in your life. Matching nightstands, accessories in pairs and other symbols of unity will not only help create the right energy for someone to come into your life, but will nurture existing relationships if you are with somebody.

8. Let In Fresh Air

Keep plenty of oxygen circulating in your bedroom by regularly opening the windows to let in fresh air, or if this is not an option, invest in an air purifier.

Plants are not recommended to purify the air, and should actually be kept out of the bedroom, as should fish or water features.

9. Avoid Photographs In The Bedroom

You should try not to have lots of photos of friends, family, or other people in the bedroom. This is because it can create the feeling of being watched, and be rather overwhelming. So don’t put up lots of posters of singers or religious figures either, and opt for calming or inspiring imagery instead.

In the area of romance, having photos of other people can have a negative effect on relationships due to the fact that a lot of us feel uncomfortable displaying affection in public.

Happy photos of you and your partner can actually boost intimacy however, by reminding you both of happy memories and creating inner positive energy. Try to have some around you home for harmony.

10. Choose Curves Over Corners

When it comes to bedroom furniture, try to choose pieces that are round, or have curved edges.

Corners are thought to create “poison arrows” of negative energy, which are directed at you as you sleep. That definitely sounds like something to avoid, and can apparently cause feelings of unease.

If your furniture does have pointed edges and you are not in the market for new furniture, consider softening the edges by draping a cloth over.
