5 Ways To Get Out Of Bed Easier On A Cold Morning

Getting out of bed in the mornings can be tough enough, but when it starts to get colder it becomes more tempting than ever to just stay in bed wrapped up in a toasty duvet.

Unfortunately we all have obligations, and hibernating for the winter isn’t really a realistic option.

Luckily there are plenty of things you can do to make your life easier in the mornings, and make leaving the comfort of your bed that little bit less daunting.

Here are our five top tips for coping with cold mornings!

Set the heating timer

Most central heating systems these days have timers. This is incredibly handy as you can set it to switch on about half an hour before you need to drag yourself out of bed.

It’s that little bit easier to make the dash to the bathroom if you don’t have to freeze once you get there!

You can also save money by only setting the heating to come on when you will actually be at home. If you’re going to be at work all day, you can just set it to switch on when you need to wake up, and when you’re going to be coming home at the end of the day!

If you don’t have a timer on your heating system you could use a stand alone heater on a timer plug – the type you use when you go on holiday, or for your Christmas lights.

Lay out your clothes the night before

If you choose what you’re going to be wearing the night before, it will not only save you time, but you’ll be able to get out of bed and get dressed and warm immediately. No standing around shivering while you locate your favourite jumper!

If you shower in the mornings, lay out your dressing gown and slippers next to your bed to make the trip to the bathroom for that lovely warm shower bearable. Showering in the mornings will help you to wake up, too!

You aren’t at your most alert when you first wake up, so giving yourself less to think about will make your mornings run a lot more smoothly!

Buy a sunrise alarm clock

It can be extra hard to get up during the colder, darker months because of the lack of sunlight in the mornings.

A lot of people suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder, where the lack of light increases the amount of melatonin, a hormone that makes us sleepy. It also decreases the production of serotonin, a hormone which affects lots of things including your sleep, your mood, and even your appetite.

Even if you do not experience symptoms of depression, the lack of light in the mornings still messes with the body’s internal clock, making waking up in the dark feel difficult and unnatural.

Investing in a sunrise alarm clock can really help reduce these symptoms and make mornings easier.

Have a delicious warm breakfast

Having a nice warm and delicious breakfast to look forward to should motivate you to get out of bed. It will also give you the energy you need to make it through the morning, and kick start your metabolism.

Porridge is a great choice, and you can switch up the toppings. Toast with a poached egg or avocado is another quick and delicious option.

If you love a nice warm cup of coffee in the morning, you can program many coffee machines to brew on a timer. Simply set everything up the night before, and wake up to a freshly brewed pot.

Play some upbeat music

A nice uplifting song or playlist can do wonders for your mood in the mornings. If you feel happy and motivated, you are much more likely to want to get out of bed and start the day, no matter how chilly it is.

Instead of using a jarring and aggressive alarm tone, which will just make you grumpy in the morning, consider using a more gentle sound, or your favourite feel good song.

Spotify have actually put together a playlist of the perfect songs to wake up to, which have been selected because they build gradually and send a positive message – ideal! You can check the playlist out here.
